Corazón Latino Commends President Biden's Fifth Monument Designation and Dedication to Native Peoples

SOUTH RIM, GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA – President Biden Designates Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. 

Felipe Benitez, Executive Director and Founder of Corazón Latino, issued the following statement: 

“We celebrate President Biden's momentous decision to designate Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni-Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon as a National Monument. His unwavering dedication to safeguarding Native lands reflects a profound respect for the ancestral connection Native tribes have with these sacred lands.

“This monumental designation, spanning an awe-inspiring 917,000 acres, fulfills the long-standing desire of Native tribes to preserve their precious lands and cultural heritage for the prosperity of generations to come. Not only does it protect this remarkable landscape, but it also allows biodiversity to flourish and safeguards the invaluable waters of the Grand Canyon region.

“The significance of President Biden's decision cannot be overstated. For years, Native tribes have ardently strived to protect these lands, and today, their relentless efforts have borne fruit. This momentous occasion stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural preservation, ensuring that the profound history and spiritual essence of the Grand Canyon region will transcend time.

“In this shared spirit of unity and gratitude, we stand together, appreciating this historic milestone that acknowledges and respects the deep-rooted connections of Native tribes to their ancestral lands. Baaj Nwaavjo translates to “where tribes roam” in Havasupai, and I’tah Kukveni translates to “our ancestral footprints” in Hopi - thus "where tribes roam; our ancestral footprints.
