FElipe Benítez, Executive Director
Felipe Benitez has more than 15 years of experience designing and implementing strategic communications programs to enhance and protect the reputations of organizations, governments, companies, and brands. Through his prior work with leading organizations like United Way Worldwide, Fenton Communications, and Ogilvy Public Relations, Benitez has designed and implemented communications and outreach strategies for advocacy campaigns worldwide, from protecting the fundamental rights of indigenous groups in the Amazon to fighting climate change to helping protect the rights of immigrants in the United States.
Sonia Rangel, Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Raised in El Paso, Texas by Mexican immigrant parents, Sonia Rangel is the Chief Operating Officer at Corazón Latino. Rangel began her career working for grassroots nonprofits in El Paso dedicated to serving underrepresented communities. In 2012, Rangel was selected as a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) fellow where she worked in the U.S. House of Representatives for then Congressman Xavier Becerra. Her background working engaging Latino audiences in her different professional experiences brings valuable insight to Corazón Latino's vision. She holds a BA in History from the University of Texas in Austin and a MPA and Masters in International Relations at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
Chelsea mervenne, Director of Environmental Programs
Born and raised in Michigan, Chelsea Mervenne joined the team as the Director of Environmental Programs in 2018. Mervenne brings scientific, communications, and community engagement expertise to the organization’s educational programming from her experience in geochemistry research and previous work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Flint and in communities near hazardous waste sites in the Midwest. Mervenne holds a B.S. and M.Sci in Earth and Environmental Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Abel Olivo, Director of Outreach and Partnerships
Abel Olivo joined Corazón Latino this year as the director of community outreach and strategic partnerships. Olivo brings over eight years as a community activist and leader in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Having strong community relationships together with over a decade of organizing experience, Olivo adds valuable insight and perspective to our grassroots, grass-tops, and other community-oriented campaigns. With over 12 years of federal level policy and advocacy experience, mostly in the non-profit sector, Olivo also brings experience in developing policy and effective implementation strategies that included coalition building and partnerships to maximize message, impact, and reach. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University and a proud Buckeye.
