Earth Marks 2023 as Hottest Year on Record: Urgent Call to Action

Frontline communities can confront the climate crisis with novel solutions

Washington, D.C. – 2023 has been officially declared the hottest year on record, surpassing all historical benchmarks. Felipe Benítez, Executive Director of Corazón Latino, issued an imperative call to action:

"The data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service underscores the urgent need for swift and comprehensive measures to mitigate our planet's escalating climate crisis.

“The disproportionate impact of rising temperatures on Latino/a/e communities, in particular, necessitates their insights and voices in shaping effective solutions. These communities are experiencing the brunt of extreme heat in the neighborhoods where they live, at their job sites, and at the places they most frequent.

“Corazón Latino advocates for vital interventions like planting trees, safeguarding forests, and phasing out fossil fuels. These efforts directly combat climate change by sequestering carbon, preserving vital ecosystems, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, active civic engagement empowers communities to drive change and influence policy, amplifying their leadership and their voices in decision-making processes.

“We at Corazón Latino are deeply committed to partnering with frontline communities in a collaborative spirit. We aim for strong, reciprocal partnerships

that honor their local cultural heritage and ancestral wisdom. Only through the co-creation of environmental initiatives can we truly forge a sustainable path together.”
