1 Big Thing: World Environment Day  🌴

We kicked-off our celebrations early!

Big picture:  Corazón Latino is slowly (and safely) returning to in-person events around the country (and the world).

  • We supported the monthly “Bicicletada del Sur” (urban bike ride) in Tucson, AZ, organized by our friends from Familias Unidas Ganando Accesibilidad (FUGA).

  • In Panamá City, Panamá, our team joined forces with Cruces Trails OBC, a local grassroots conservation organization, in a tree planting and trail restoration event at Parque Nacional Camino de Cruces.

  • In San Juan, Puerto Rico, we joined Scuba Dogs Society in the Escambrón Embellece, a coral reef restoration and birdwatching initiative.

What's next:

  • Phoenix, AZ: Join us on June 5 at 6:00 PM MST for a Mother Earth celebration with the all-female mariachi band Las Azaleas at the Río Salado Audubon Center. Register here.

  • Washington, DC: Celebrate with us on June 6 at 6:00 PM EDT at the Alethia Tanner Park. Program will include a Danzatone class with Jenny Osoria and a performance by Trío Caliente. Register here

2. World Oceans Day: Inspiring young conservation leaders in Puerto Rico 🐢

We are proud to support a pilot program to engage young leaders in ocean conservation in Puerto Rico with Scuba Dogs Society and our Senior Scientific Advisor, Dr. Ana Trujillo.

Why it matters: The program will provide 15 young leaders (ages 13-17) with hands-on training and experience in marine conservation, microplastics, blue economy, and strategic communications for conservation.

What's next:  Next year, we are planning to replicate and scale these efforts to other areas of the archipelago (and perhaps to the continental U.S. as well).

How can I get involved?

  • GTT is a co-production of Black Millennials for Flint, Environmental Defense Fund, BlackGirlEnvironmentalist, EcoMadres, and Corazón Latino.

Also new:  We co-hosted a Spanish-language conversation on the American Jobs Plan and the Latino community with the newspaper El Comercio de Colorado. Watch the full broadcast here.

  • Guests included: Solar Foundation Puerto Rico’s Carlos Alberto Velásquez and Conservation Colorado/Protégete's Issamar Pichardo.

  • This conversation was a co-production of El Comercio de Colorado, Corazón Latino, Environmental Defense Fund, and Climate Power.

Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy and celebrate our Mother Earth every day. Please make sure to spend at least 20 minutes each day in nature (here’s why 💚).

¡Muchas Gracias!
